“The laying of a trail… becomes not only a pleasure in itself, but an inducement to plan a better way of life, to construct worthwhile things, or to weave a better product in the loom of our being” – Earle Amos Brooks, A Handbook of the Outdoors, 1925

“A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.” ― Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There

What is work, what is craft, what is art? Do you follow the path, do you step off it, do you take a shortcut? Are you in a hurry, are you chatting, are you paying attention? Is it fun, is it hard, is it boring?

The trail-making group is a collection of people who, more or less, met through the Trail Maintenance Team in the Hengill area, working on trail construction at Hellisheiði and Nesjavellir. We are friends, we are artists, we work together. We guide people along the path — the path must be enjoyable for you to stay on it.

The goal of the project is to bring together our diverse skills and shared experiences in a coherent way and to provoke thought about nature conservation, trail-making, and friendship.
