Soil Chromatography Workshop

Soil Chromatography Workshop

Soil Chromatography Workshop with Earthlings is a participatory workshop that merges art, ecology, and science through the practice of soil chromatography. This method of analysis was developed in the 20th century and is still used by farmers all over the world, as it is an example of accessible science and soil eco-semiotics. Visual representation of the soil’s structure can give an idea of the health and personality of the soil, allowing us to get to know our surroundings on a deeper level. Participants will do soil chromatography with soil samples collected all around Hamraborg.

The resulting images of soil chromatography reveal hidden structures, mineral compositions, and organic traces within the soil, creating intricate, almost cosmic patterns. Each chromatogram becomes both a scientific imprint and an abstract work, which presents a portrait of a place. Through guided discussion, participants reflect on what lies beneath urban surfaces, how land holds memory, history, and ecological relationships.
