Kvoxar

Kvoxar

Kvoxar are mythical creatures that inhabit the hill by Kópavogur Church. There are various rumors about their origin and antics, especially among the town's original inhabitants. It is not easy to see them with the naked eye; people rather sense their presence, at twilight or during certain lighting conditions. They often forage for food in the sea and just like the raven, they are attracted to shiny glimmering objects. They have a tendency to get tangled and even stuck since they are particularly fond of anything with a beginning and an end, such as a string or a cord. It is considered a good omen if you spot one of them (in a residence or a garden), especially if you happen to be facing north. In recent years, the Kvoxar have taken a particular liking to Kópavogur’s public swimming pool, where they have become something of a nuisance. They can be thieving and mischievous, especially towards outsiders (from nearby towns). Locals are reluctant to be associated with the beings, as it is said that speaking openly about their existence and pranks can bring bad luck. There are stories of people suffering all sorts of unexplained misfortunes after expressing their dislike of the creatures. Those whom they choose to befriend, however, who earn their trust, can count on them as a source of good fortune.

All exhibitions open on Friday, August 28 at 5pm and remain open during each location’s regular opening hours until September 4.
