Riccardo Vailati & Ívar Ölmu

Riccardo Vailati & Ívar Ölmu

Riccardo Vailati – an independent curator, writer, and visual artist based in Reykjavík. Vailati works across Iceland, the Netherlands, and Italy, and his practice explores different emotional landscapes in relation to specific geographical locations, investigating the presence of symbols that evoke personal memories and lived traumas. Drawing on existentialist thought and the Beat Generation, his work seeks to build genuine connections that generate new ways of understanding and meaning. Through this approach, he encourages the demystification of idols and the deconstruction of pre-existing structures. He is a member of the curatorial team at RÝMD, an art space in Breiðholt, and one of the members of Á milli, an artist-run space.

Ívar Ölmu works with different media and often mixes video, performance art and sculpture in his works. Although the results are varied, the works most often contain some kind of sculpture, often abstract and moving objects made from found materials: wood, iron and recycled electronics and motors. Ívar’s creative process is characterized by curiosity and play. In his works, Ívar explores the inherent properties of the material and arranges them in new contexts. These experiments with the material lead to effortless and natural works of art that often reveal the underlying nature of consumerism in a humorous as well as serious way.
